Ultimate World Cruise: Prince Christian Sound in Greenland and Izumi

Intro

We had just finished our stop in Reykjavik, Iceland, and it was everything we wanted in such a short time. The Ultimate World Cruise was the best idea I had for the culmination of my Round the World Trip 2024, and now we were moving towards the West, and Greenland was our next destination.

Day 05/22 – An evening of fun

It was still day 5 of 22 on the Serenade of the Seas, as part of the last mini segment of the Ultimate World Cruise. Iceland was behind us, so now it was time to relax aboard the ship. After watching a movie about Iceland in the Cinema, we were now ready for dinner in the Main Dining Room. And, yes, while I am on board I will be eating all the fish and seafood I can. I just love it and it is just way healthier than red meats, I’m sorry!

The salmon was great, but the spongy cake was also really good.

After dinner, we went to the Tropical Theater, where the 5 singers of the Ultimate World Cruise were doing a show called Marquee, showcasing their Broadway style songs.

And well, after that, and given that it is Christmas time in real time as I write this blog post, in the Safari Lounge, they celebrated Christmas in August. They also had a contest for the best Holiday dress of the evening.

After that, we went to bed and relaxed, since a few days at sea were coming our way.

Day 06/22 – Quick day at Sea

Day 06 was a flash, since it was a Day at Sea, with some rough waters still around us. We went to the Windjammer for breakfast, then coffee at the Starbucks, then got ready and went to the gym and sauna.

After that, we did the Enrichment Today: Qaqortoq, at Tropical Theatre. Very informative, and we learned a lot about this town we were about to explore in Greenland.

The day went by quickly, just relaxing after all the running around in Iceland, and now it was already dinner. For the My Time Dining reservation, I got the tuna and bread as starter.

Some cod and rice as the main dish…

But also chose to try the Fettuccine Alfredo. I am not a fan of pasta but the Alfredo sauce just bring me some many good memories. Love it.

After dinner, we went to the Tropical Theater for tonight’s show, and it was a tribute to The Beatles. I am not from this generation, but I recognized some of the songs that they played. It is always good to have an option for entertainment at night, even if it is not a Broadway style show every time. Royal Caribbean did an OK job keeping a nightly show for an Ultimate World Cruise, a difficult task since most cruises are repetitive on a 3, 4, 7 day basis.

Day 07/22 – Arriving to the coast of Greenland

Day 07 was a Day at Sea, but promised to be one of the most spectacular ones of this journey. We would be going through the Prins Christianssund fjord that offers great views of mountain ranges and glaciers.

The sunrise was epic, offering great views of the icebergs surrounding now the cruise on calmer waters than the last few days.

As we got closer to the frozen land, it reminded me a lot of the beautiful views we got in Alaska, more specifically the Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier.

Day 07/22 – Prince Christian Sound

Slowly but surely, the Serenade of the Seas got into the fjord and started the journey West towards the promised glaciers.

The icebergs, growlers, calm water and mountainous terrain gave this area a landscape impossible to describe. It was super calm and everyone was just excited seeing all of this.

We finally made it to the first set of glaciers, and wow this one was huge. Also reminded me of the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina, that I had visited last year.

We continued West in the search of more glaciers, and while we were getting lunch in the Windjammer, we noticed the huge cake that they had out to celebrate the birthday of the Serenade of the Seas. 21 years old for this ship.

More glaciers were coming on this fjord, and while doing some exercise in the fitness center we were able to spot them. Really great weather for today.

Apparently we were not the only ones in this whole area enjoying this beautiful view.

We were amazed of the number of glaciers that would just pop up every now and then. It was definitely a day to stay out of the room, and enjoy the view.

One last view of some waterfalls by the last glacier, and soon we were out of the nice weather, since it started being windy and rainy again.

Day 07/22 – Izumi

Later that night and during a storm, we skipped the Main Dining Room, and decided to book the 2nd of our 5 Specialty Dining options of this cruise: Izumi. To get here we had to go out through the storm, and I feel they should fix this, but it is ok I guess if the weather is nice out.

For starter, I got the pork gyoza, which I had eaten earlier a lot during this Round the World trip while I was in China.

We were able to get 2 Main Dishes or Entrees, and I pick the sashimi…

…and the Yaki Udon with beef, which I could not finish. And I’ll explain why later.

The dessert was the lava cake, and unfortunately it tasted frozen and did not have the lava effect when we broke. It was also a little bit too rich in flour.

Overall, we had an OK dinner at Izumi. We decided not to go back again to this restaurant, and repeat one of the other 2 Specialty Restaurants in the future. The Udon was too thick, the meat overcook. The sashimi did not give seafood, it was missing a lot of taste. Something was very off with our meal and we did not have a great time here.

For the night show, we finished Day 07 with a spotlight of one of the singers of the Ultimate World Cruise. Wow, we had been here already one week, and 15 more days were still to come.
