SeaWorld Orlando: My First Experience in this Park

Introduction

Visiting SeaWorld Orlando for the first time was an experience I approached with both excitement and hesitation. The park has long been the center of public debate, with many critics raising concerns about its treatment of marine mammals. Animal advocates highlight controversial practices, such as alleged mistreatment of orcas, forced breeding, and incidents of aggression among the animals. These stories, compounded by a significant decline in SeaWorld’s attendance—especially following the COVID-19 pandemic—had always made me cautious. But with a fresh focus on roller coasters and thrill rides, plus efforts in conservation and animal rescue, I decided it was time to see SeaWorld for myself.

I went with an open mind, eager to explore beyond the controversy and to get a taste of SeaWorld’s newer attractions. It helped that tickets were affordable; my single-day entry and Quick Queue access cost much less than a day at Disney, adding to the appeal. Once inside, I was ready to experience everything from SeaWorld’s roller coasters to its educational exhibits. The animal rescue center, in particular, caught my interest with its focus on rehabilitating marine animals, aligning with the park’s commitment to conservation. This was going to be a day full of surprises, and I was eager to share my first impressions.

First time in SeaWorld Orlando

I had been hesitant to go to SeaWorld Orlando for quite some time. All the drama and criticism surrounding these parks have always deter me from going to them.

Some people don’t like to go to SeaWorld because of the public debate and criticism over the treatment of its marine mammals. Some of the allegations include:

  • Animal abuse: Some say that SeaWorld’s practices constitute animal abuse, including forced separations from mothers and pods, sexual abuse, and unnatural breeding programs.
  • Orca attacks: There have been many of recorded orca attacks and acts of aggression.
  • Attendance decline: SeaWorld’s attendance has been declining, falling 8% when COVID-19 hit in 2020 and another 5% since then.

However, SeaWorld claims to provide quality care and treatment for its animals. They also say that they are committed to conservation, including sustainable sourcing of fish for their piscivorous animals and animal rescue and rehabilitation.

Just like I did with Hersheypark, I wanted to give this park the benefit of the doubt. I also did not want to spend hundreds of dollars on another Park Hopping in Disney World. This is basically what I spent to get into SeaWorld:

SeaWorld Orlando Single-Day Ticket 1$64.99
SeaWorld Orlando Quick Queue Unlimited 1$79.99

Really cheap if you ask me, but I was about to see why it is not as expensive.

Manta

Another reason to visit this park was the new focus they seem to have now: roller coasters. It is basically the roller coaster capital of Central Florida, and I was about to embark on many of them:

Mako – A hypercoaster and the tallest, fastest, and longest coaster in Orlando, known for its extreme speeds and airtime.

Manta – A flying coaster that simulates the experience of gliding like a manta ray, with riders facing downward as they soar and dive.

Kraken – A floorless coaster inspired by the mythological sea creature, featuring intense loops and rolls.

Ice Breaker – A launch coaster with four launches, including a steep 93-foot-tall spike with a 100-degree angle, offering a thrilling multi-directional ride.

Pipeline: The Surf Coaster – A stand-up coaster introduced in 2023, designed to mimic the sensation of surfing over waves with unique bouncing seats.

Journey to Atlantis – A water coaster that combines dark ride elements with a thrilling drop into water, blending coaster thrills with a splash.

Penguin Trek: Opened in 2024, this family-friendly launched coaster offers a gentler experience through icy landscapes.

Super Grover’s Box Car Derby: Perfect for young thrill-seekers, this junior coaster is a staple of the park’s Sesame Street Land

I used my Quick Queue, a simplified version of the Lighting Lane, and went directly to the front. The view of the Manta Aquarium was unique.

SeaWorld Rescue Center

SeaWorld Orlando’s Rescue Center is a key part of the park’s commitment to animal welfare and marine conservation, working to rescue, rehabilitate, and release marine animals in need. Established decades ago, the center focuses on aiding injured, sick, and orphaned marine animals, including manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, and birds. Often these animals are victims of pollution, boat strikes, or entanglement, and the center’s team of animal care experts and veterinarians provide round-the-clock medical care to nurse them back to health.

The Rescue Center’s work is not only about rehabilitation but also about education and raising awareness. Guests visiting SeaWorld can learn more about the rescue efforts, conservation practices, and the impact of human activities on marine life. The center has rescued over 40,000 animals to date, and many have been successfully returned to their natural habitats. Additionally, SeaWorld’s team collaborates with federal and state agencies, contributing to broader conservation research and efforts to protect marine ecosystems. This work emphasizes SeaWorld’s role in marine conservation beyond entertainment, making a meaningful difference for ocean wildlife.

There was also a section with the Coral Rescue Center, where they would grow coral to reinsert in the ocean.

Sea turtles were also part of this ecosystem.

Now, it was time for me to see the Dolphin show, not without seeing the alligators on the way.

Dolphin Theater show

The Dolphin Theater show had a few times today, but I picked to do everything in geographical order. I felt that having Quick Queue in the rides, and this being a smaller park, I was going to be able to do everything, including the shows.

The show was interesting and reminded me of the one in Cartagena, when I went earlier this year.

After the show, I went down to the Dolphin Cove, where you could see the dolphins swimming in this big pool.

Journey to Atlantis

Time to leave Nature and Shows on the side, and now I had to go into one of the most famous rides in this park: Journey to Atlantis. To do so, they have a locker system where you can rent a locker, and move around the park, similar to Six Flags. I do not like to pay for lockers but it is what it is.

The queue is interesting and there are aquariums filled with sharks and many other animals everywhere.

Even the quick queue was a little bit busy for this ride, but I really like. I did not get too wet and like the dry roller coaster at the end. I was not really expecting that at all.

More animals on the floor, they really filled this park with aquariums.

Kraken

Using the same lockers, I went to Kraken, the floorless roller coaster. It was fun but definitely needs to be refurbished.

Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin

One of the most defined lands of SeaWorld is Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin.

Here, they turn the immersion a notch, and let you know that you are in this last continent.

Unfortunately, the new roller coaster of this land was not ready yet, but it did open later this summer.

In the meantime, I went into the Empire of the Penguin section. An area with cold temperatures, very refreshing for Orlando, and got to see all the little friends swimming fast and moving around.

Time for a break at… Coaster Coffee? And with the Starbucks font… girl.

The coffee was horrible, service mediocre, and the prices ridiculous. SeaWorld really needs to step up their game here and get a real coffee place to run this.

SeaWorld Sky Tower

It was almost noon, and my morning in SeaWorld was coming to an end. For an additional price, with tickets bought downstairs, you can access the SeaWorld Sky Tower.

The ascension is really thrilling, but the views are just amazing. You could see Kraken and Mako.

The Orca Encounter Stadium which I would visit later…

Magic Kingdom was all the way back…

The sister park of SeaWorld, Aquatica Orlando, was busy right next to us.

Bayside Stadium and Pipeline: The Surf Coaster, my goals for later today.

Epcot was peeking all the way in the back. Walt Disney World is really huge.

But the most exciting view was Epic Universe and the new hotels from Universal. Coming very soon in May 2025.

Finally descending, I had my finish my morning in SeaWorld Orlando, but I had more things to do in this park. Do not miss the next entry.
